Hotels: Please
find below the names and addresses of hotels that have extended discounted
rates to NASOH participants. To secure the group rate, all attendees should
reference NASOH when making reservations to secure
group rates (apologies to CAMM and NMHSthis was done for simplicity).
If NASOHs room allocation in your
desired hotel is fully booked, please contact Matthew
McKenzie to see if more rooms and can be set aside for conference
attendees. Obviously, this will be easier earlier in 2010 than closer
to the May conference date.
PLEASE NOTE: Reservations must be made
by April 12 (or earlier, see individual hotels
below) in order to secure the group rate. After April 12, rooms return
to their normal rates. More information about accommodations and other
attractions available from: http://mysticcountry.com/

There are also seven rooms with four bunks
(two bunk beds) each available for $20/night at UConn Avery Point's Project
Oceanology Building. This is hostel style housing with shared baths: those
interested in this option will have to provide their own bedding, breakfast,
and transportation between UConn Avery Point and Mystic Seaport museum.
Those interested should contact Carl Herzog (carlzog@gmail.com),
Chair of the Graduate Planning Committee, to reserve spaces and to make
payment in advance.
Travel
to Mystic Seaport and UConn Avery Point :
Located almost equidistant between Boston and New York City, Mystic Seaport
and UConn Avery Point are close to several New England cities: 134 miles
from New York City, 100 miles from Boston, 50 miles from Providence, and
55 miles from Hartford. Given the logistical structure of the conference,
independent car travel will be most convenient. Most of the hotels listed
above are located at Exit 90 off I-95 and are about ¾ of a mile
from Mystic Seaport.
For those coming by air, Providence's T.
F. Green Airport (PVD) and Hartford's Bradley International Airport
(BDL) are closest, but host fewer international or direct flights (car
rental options are available at both airports). For those coming from
overseas, connecting to public rail transportation (Amtrak) from Boston's
Logan International (BOS) is easiest. Those pursuing this option are recommended
to take the Silver Line from Logan Airport to Boston's South Station.
From South Station, Amtrak serves both Mystic (one mile from Mystic Seaport),
or far more frequently, New London, from which a roughly $30 cab ride
will get you to Mystic.
To travel to UConn Avery Point, take Interstate
95 to Exit 87 (Route 349/Clarence Sharp Highway). Continue on 349/Clarence
Sharp Highway; at second traffic light turn right. At the next traffic
light, turn left on Benham Road. Proceed for about 1.5 miles to the entrance
of the Avery Point Campus. For directions to the campus and a campus map,
please follow the following link: http://www.averypoint.uconn.edu/avery_point/campus_map.pdf
"Given that the budget would not support
shuttle service to each of the hotels listed above, we ask that participants
please provide their own transportation to and from hotels and conference
venues. If you are coming by car, we ask that you please consider providing
rides to conference events to those without private transportation. This
will help make the event run smoothly and keep overall costs down."
Events and Banquets (by
host organization):
In addition to access to Mystic Seaport Museum on Thursday and Friday,
conference attendees will have the opportunity to join a number of events
sponsored by the conference hosts.
National Maritime Historical Society
(NMHS):
The NMHS will be holding a seminar on publishing in Sea History on Thursday
at 1315 on the Mystic Seaport grounds.
Society of Nautical Research (SNR):

conference attendees to their 100th Anniversary Reception and lecture
at UConn's Branford House. Please see the conference program for final

Council of American Maritime Museums
(CAMM):
On Friday, the Council of American Maritime Museums (CAMM) will host attendees
at a reception on Mystic Seaport grounds.
Steamship Historical Society of America
(SSHSA):
Following the CAMM reception, the Steamship Historical Society of America
(SSHSA) is hosting a free downriver cruise on Mystic Seaport's SS Sabino.
Though free of charge, reservations are required: those interested need
to contact Rebecca Torsell (rtorsell@sshsa.org) to hold their places.
Plenary Banquet and Lecture ($42):
Attendees are also invited to attend the meeting's plenary banquet ($42
additional charge) at Mystic Seaport's River Room on Friday evening featuring
as plenary speaker Helen Rozwadoski, Associate Professor of History, University
of Connecticut. Her book Fathoming the Ocean: The Discovery and
Exploration of the Deep Sea (Harvard University Press, 2004),
won NASOH's 2005 John Lyman Book Award, Best book in the Category of Science
and Technology; and won the 2008 Watson Davis and Helen Miles Davis Prize
from the History of Science Society.
University of Connecticut, Avery Point
(free):
On Saturday afternoon, attendees are invited to take a lighthouse tour
of Fisher's Island Sound sponsored by the University of Connecticut, Avery
Point. Though free of charge, reservations are required: those interested
need to contact Matthew McKenzie (matthew.mckenzie@uconn.edu) to hold
their places.
Awards Banquet (included in full registration
fee):
On Saturday evening, the 2010 awards will be announced at the Awards Banquet
(included in full registration fee) at UConn Avery Point's Branford House.
Pending Events:
